The Associated Press reports that Milwaukee box assistant coach Darwin Hamm will be the next coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.
The AP quoted someone with “knowledge of the decision” in the announcement. The report said Ham accepted the offer but did not disclose the terms. He replaces Frank Vogel, who was sacked at the end of the season after failing to make the Lakers playoffs.
The 48-year-old Ham will be the 28th coach in Lakers history. He has never been head coach, but has been an assistant to the Milwaukee Box since 2018, including the team’s 2021 NBA title race. .
Last year the Lakers went 33-49, a big disappointment considering that the team had lined up a “Big Three” by importing guard Russell Westbrook to join LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
James has already welcomed Ham through social media. “So damn excited !!!!!!!!” James tweeted. “Congratulations and welcome coach DHam !!”
Ham has been a player development assistant coach with the Kobe Bryant Lakers from 2011-13, head coach Mike Brown and Mike D’Antony’s staff. Hamm then served five years on the Atlanta Hawks staff under Mike Budenholzer, later joining Milwaukee staff.
So damn excited !!!!!!!! Congratulations and welcome coach DHam !! 3 # Lakeshow3
