Rumors of an active shooter quitting after a light-weight boxing title fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday night caused panic among fans.
Gervanta Davis knocked out Rolando Romero in the main event. But as the crowd left the square, a loud noise that was mistaken for a gunshot, terrified fans, perhaps still disturbed by the recent mass shootings over New York and Texas.
Reports indicate that rumors of an active shooter at the scene caused panic, causing those who left to return to the field for shelter.
It was later reported that 10 people were injured in the stampede. The NYPD said in a statement that they had been sent to a New York area hospital in stable condition with minor injuries.
Tennis star Naomi Osaka was at the scene and tweeted the observation that she “heard screams and saw people running” and then said “there was an active shooter and we had to lock the door in a room.” He claimed he was “horrible”.
Madonna was reportedly at the scene, but was not immediately available for comment.
I was just at the Barclays Center and all of a sudden I heard screams and saw people running, then we were screaming that there was an active shooter and we had to lock the door in a room, I was a very scary man.
